A Master Coiffurist Reflects On A Stylish Career
By Nathan James

If you take a walk around Manhattan’s tony Upper East Side, home to diplomats, socialites, and old money, you may  come upon the chic, fabulous Mark De Alwis , who keeps Gotham’s elite looking sleek and jazzy.  The stylist’s long road to the Big Apple began in Sri Lanka, where his talent for coiffure manifested itself when he was just 16.  “I was doing hair from that young age,” Mark recollects, “and by the time I was 19, I was the head stylist at a big salon, in a major hotel.”  His work eventually brought him across the Pacific, to New York, where he has worked, owned and operated his amazing  salon for nearly two decades.  “I have clients who are socialites, celebrities, and just ordinary people,” he says, “and we make them all look fabulous.”

Mark’s artistic vision draws on those who have mentored him, and he creates stunning new looks that have followed the trends of the day.  Just as in fashion, where hemlines rise or fall with social mores, “hairstyles reflect our society”, he notes.  “Running this salon is a challenge, “Mark allows, “but it’s what I love to do.”  That passion has manifested itself in the shop’s many accolades, including previously owning the Best rated Hair Salon in NYC for over 15 years. Mark De Alwis is a Top Rated New York City hairstylist , his haircuts and styling are top rated including his color and signature Highlights.  In addition to all that, Mark is also an accomplished fashion designer, and while in Sri Lanka, he had his own fashion boutique.

Mark’s work extends beyond coiffure, and he’s done makeup for international pop stars, models, and actors.  Labelleladiva PR agency head Yvonne Forbes had high praise for Mark, saying, “Mark is one of the most amazing celebrity stylists [working] today.  His creative vision is beyond what the mind can comprehend.”   Mark’s deft, but delicate touch brings out celebrities’ theatrical best, and when an emerging film star prepared for his signature cabaret show in October, he went straight to Mark for his hairdo.  “There’s just nobody else like him,” the actor stated.

“I’ve been a hair stylist for a while,” Mark reflects, “and it’s still interesting every day.”  Whether it’s getting his customer’s preferred look just so, or prepping a model or celebrity for a dazzling photo shoot, Mark is known for his diligence and comportment, always turning his clients out in the most eye-catching way.   If you want to look A-List amazing make you appointment now!

Colombre Photo

Colombre

Is the new trendy color technique on the scene which combines the Ombré dye pattern (transitioning between two shades, typically from dark to light) with bright colors or pastel colors and it's called Colombré

Balayage Photo

Balayage

Balayage involves a stylist hand-painting the highlights so that they look even more natural, with depth and dimension that resemble the effects of the sun. Balayage means "sweeping" in French, and is a reference to both the sweeping motions of the painting process and the small brooms used by Parisian stylists.

Ombre Photo

Ombre

Ombre  taken from the French for “shadow” or “shade,” ombre hair color features gradient shadings that imbue hair with an edgy aesthetic. Unlike the natural beauty of Bayalage, ombre highlights transition more dramatically from the dark roots to the lighter tips. Though the ombre style is suited to complexions of all shades, you should have a consultation with your stylists to determine which colors will flatter your look. For example, those with darker skin can shoot for deep reds and coppers, compliments those with darker skin while fairer tones can experiment with blondes and caramel colors.
